How a treatment decision is made

Work starts with listening: where the pain began, how far it travels and what it has taken from you. Then comes the nerve examination: muscle strength, feeling, reflexes and walking.

The images are read after that. A finding on the MRI that does not fit your symptoms may not be the cause of your pain. That is why the images themselves matter, not only the report.

The decision comes from putting these together. For most spine pain, treatment without surgery is the first path. Surgery comes up when its benefit outweighs its risk, and those risks are gone through with you beforehand.
